About the New Hampshire Liberty Alliance | NHLA
Founded in November 2003, the New Hampshire Liberty Alliance (NHLA) is a non-partisan, volunteer-run organization working to advance individual liberty in New Hampshire.
We review legislation, publish the Gold Standard, track lawmakers through our Liberty Ratings, support liberty-minded candidates, and help citizens take effective action in the legislative process and their communities.
What We Do
Review New Hampshire Legislation
NHLA volunteers review bills introduced in the New Hampshire Legislature and evaluate how they may affect individual liberty.
We consider factors including civil liberties, personal responsibility, property rights, constitutionality, government accountability, regulation, fiscal impact and taxation.
Publish the Gold Standard
During the legislative session, NHLA publishes the Gold Standard, our legislative voting guide.
The Gold Standard identifies important bills, explains their impact on liberty, and provides NHLA’s recommended position. It gives legislators, activists and citizens a clear way to understand important votes taking place in Concord.
Track Lawmakers with Liberty Ratings
The Gold Standard also forms the foundation of NHLA’s annual Liberty Ratings.
We use selected legislative activity to evaluate how New Hampshire Representatives and Senators have acted on issues affecting individual liberty. Each legislator receives a score and grade, giving voters a transparent way to see how their elected officials have performed in Concord.
Our searchable Liberty Ratings make it easy to look up an individual legislator, district, score and voting record.
Support Liberty-Minded Candidates
NHLA works to identify, endorse and support candidates who will advance individual liberty in New Hampshire.
Our political action work includes candidate recruitment and training, endorsements, campaign support, and helping voters understand where candidates stand before they reach the State House.
Help Citizens Take Action
Protecting liberty requires people to participate.
NHLA helps New Hampshire residents understand the legislative process, follow important bills, contact their representatives, testify at public hearings and get involved in the issues that matter to them.
We also bring legislators, activists and supporters together through events such as NHLA Power Hour and our annual Liberty Dinner.
Strengthen Civil Society
NHLA believes strong communities are built through voluntary cooperation, private charity and neighbors helping neighbors.
Our Civic Action work supports community-based solutions and encourages New Hampshire residents to help one another without unnecessary government involvement.
How NHLA’s Legislative Work Fits Together
1. We Review Bills
NHLA volunteers examine legislation introduced at the New Hampshire State House.
2. We Publish Recommendations
Important bills and NHLA’s positions are published in the Gold Standard.
3. Legislators Vote
We track relevant legislative activity on the bills we have identified.
4. We Publish Liberty Ratings
That record helps form our annual Liberty Ratings, giving New Hampshire voters a clear way to evaluate their legislators.
Become a Member
NHLA is entirely volunteer-run. Membership helps support our legislative research, the Gold Standard, Liberty Ratings, political action, website, events and other work advancing liberty in New Hampshire.
Full members can vote in Board elections, receive member communications and access member-only resources. Activist Membership is also available for people who contribute volunteer time in place of the annual membership fee.
Board of Directors
NHLA is governed by a seven-member Board of Directors. Board members serve two-year terms in a rotating election cycle.
