Dear Candidate,

Thank you for your willingness to serve in state government. The New Hampshire Liberty Alliance (NHLA) is a non-partisan organization dedicated to preserving New Hampshire's tradition of personal liberty. As such, we promote good governance by supporting candidates who share these values. The NHLA's PAC provides endorsements and monetary contributions to selected candidates based on a number of factors, including responses to this questionnaire. Endorsed candidates will be listed on our website and candidates are encouraged to promote the endorsement.

Occupational Licensing *

If it's in the public interest that a profession be performed competently, the state should license that occupation.

Professions should only be licensed if there is a compelling public safety issue.

The state should let the free market decide if any person or company is qualified to perform a job.

Law enforcement *

Since police officers perform a demanding and dangerous job, they should be held to a different standard than other public officials and be permitted more latitude when enforcing the law.

Police perform their jobs within a legal framework that has found an appropriate balance between individual rights and public safety.

Police have been given too much authority with little oversight which makes it too easy for police to circumvent due process and violate civil liberties. More safeguards need to be put into place to protect the rights of citizens and the accused.

Taxes *

People should pay directly for government services received through user fees such as tolls and tuition. Most general taxes should be eliminated.

NH's tax rates stifle economic activity; some should be lowered or eliminated.

The current levels of taxes are sufficient to meet the state's needs; new or higher taxes are unnecessary.

Not all needs for government services have been met. An income tax or general sales tax should be considered to gain more revenue.

Right-to-know *

The public's right to access governmental records should be somewhat more tightly restricted than current statute allows.

Government must operate in the open and offer unfettered access to most records, with few exceptions.

Government records should be released on a "need to know" basis.

There should be state laws prohibiting adult possession and use of drugs without a prescription. *

Second Amendment *

Common-sense firearms regulations such as background checks, permits, military style assault weapons bans etc., make our society safer and do not infringe on the Second Amendment.

Firearms pose a threat to civilized society and should only be allowed for law enforcement.

Adults have a fundamental right to self defense, and should not be restricted by law in what firearms they own or how they carry them.

Property rights *

People who have legally obtained property should not be restricted in what they do on that property, as long as others' rights are not violated.

Zoning and smart-growth ordinances are necessary to encourage an efficient, harmonious living environment and to control development.

Tenants rights *

The state should impose limits on rents or security deposits to prevent landlords from exploiting tenants.

Market forces are generally sufficient to provide a balance between tenant rights and landlords.

Education *

The education of a child is the responsibility of the parent and the state should have no say in the type of education given.

It is the proper role of government to provide educational institutions and to require attendance in public or private school.

It is the responsibility of the state to ensure that every child has access to an adequate education, but the parents have the right to decide the type of education (private or public schools, or home education).

Housing Crisis - Families can't afford to live in the state. To address this crisis New Hampshire should (choose all that apply): *

Require that at least 10% of any new major development be set asside for affordable housing.

Prevent landlords from 'price gouging' by limiting the any annual increases to no higher than inflation.

Provide tax incentives for new high density housing providing a reduced tax rate for up to 5 years after construction.

Health care professionals should be allowed to keep patient information confidential, much like lawyers' attorney-client privilege.

Health care professionals should be required to report to authorities when they suspect serious crimes such as illegal drug use or child molestation have occurred.

Health and prescription records need to be available to the state or local authorities to catch drug offenders before their problems become too serious.
