Bill Review Season

The time is upon us for the next bill review season. New bills are expected to start coming out any day now. We are encouraging all members to take part in the bill review process to help identify pro- and anti-liberty bills that may need our attention.

Bill reviewing has been made easy with the bill review checklist provided on the website. Best of all, you can do it anytime in the comfort of your home. If you’ve never done this, but believe that you are a principled supporter of liberty and would like to have something to say about proposed legislation, this is your chance!

To become involved in the bill reviewing process, please email Jeremy at research@nhliberty.org.

Lynne Blankenbeker for State Rep.

Lynne Blankenbeker is running for State Representative in a special election this November 3rd in Merrimack County, District 11 (Concord area). She has taken the NHLA Candidate Survey and has proven herself to clearly understand and respect liberty and has therefore earned our endorsement.

We are asking our membership to please help get Lynne elected. There’s not much time left.

Her opponent is former State Rep. James MacKay, who received a D in 2005, D+ in 2006, C+ in 2007 and a C in 2008 on the NHLA Liberty Ratings.

You can check out her bio and issues on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=156938890922.

You can also watch her in an exclusive interview with Denis Goddard on Capitol Access: http://www.nhcaptv.com/episode/86.

Candidate Training Session

It’s not too early to start planning for the 2010 election. If you are interested in running for State Representative or know of a good liberty candidate you can help, start learning now what it will entail and figure out the most effective way to win.

Anyone running as a conservative Republican (or someone who can pass for one) will want to attend the candidates training seminar hosted by the Reagan Network on October 17 and 18. Contact them at mattwenfran -@- verizon.net to get an application.

Anyone running as a Democrat or Independent will want to stay tuned to the NHLA calendar. As soon as we know of any seminars, we will post them.

House Veto Session

The State House will be holding a special session on Wednesday, October 28 at 10 am to overturn any legislation Governor Lynch vetoed this past legislative session. The three items on the agenda are:

  • HB 443, an act relative to underground storage facility operator training and relative to requirements for guaranteed price plans and prepaid contracts for petroleum, SUPPORT VETO
  • HB 648, an act relative to the use of marijuana for medical purposes, OVERTURN VETO and
  • HB 655, an act extending senior active status to judges over 70 years of age. SUPPORT VETO

We are calling out to all our members to call or email your Representatives and Senator today. It is imperative that they hear our voice to ensure that we get the two-thirds vote in both chambers.

We will also be producing a Gold Standard for this session. If you are available to help pass them out, please email research@nhliberty.org to make arrangements.

Legislative Food Drive

On Wednesday, October 28, the Legislature will have large cardboard boxes set up in the House Common Room (Rooms 121–122) of the State House for the purpose of collecting non-perishable food items for the NH Food Bank. We encourage all members who are attending the House veto session to please bring something to donate. If you are not attending the session, we ask that you stop by anyway and drop something off. This is a great opportunity if us to demonstrate that volunteerism is more powerful and more effective than government intervention.

Monetary contributions will also be accepted. Please make checks payable to the NH Food Bank.

Revenue Summit Meeting

The Ways and Means Committee will be holding a two-day “State revenue information session” on October 21 and 22 at 9:00 am. This is another sneaky attempt of drumming up support for an income tax in New Hampshire. The Chair of the committee is a huge fan of the income tax.

If you’re not in favor of the income tax and/or a broad based sales tax, report to Room 202 of the LOB building on the 21st and 22nd and listen in. No public comment will be allowed, as this is not a public hearing. Upon arrival, be sure to pick up your “No New Taxes” sticker to let them know why you’re there.

Here is the schedule for the session on the 21st (which may not be 100% accurate).

Here is the schedule for the session on the 22nd (which may not be 100% accurate).

There may also be a protest taking place outside if that’s more your interest.

Liberty Book Club

The Liberty Book Club will be holding its monthly meeting on Oct. 15 at 7:00pm at Liberty Books & Comics in Concord, N.H. This month’s book of discussion will be Civil Disobedience by Henry David Thoreau.

NHLA at Free Keene Fest

The Free Keene Fest is a public outreach festival held each spring and fall with the purpose of having fun while introducing new people to the ideas of liberty. This fall’s event was held on Sunday, October 18 from 11:00 am ’til 3:00 pm at 82 Main Street (Railroad Square) in Keene, N.H.

There was live music and food at the event, as well as many liberty-minded exhibitors promoting their organizations, ideas and goals for achieving more liberty in our lifetime.

The NHLA was present at the event as one of the exhibitors handing out our new tri-fold brochure, 2009 Liberty Ratings, selling T-Shirts, pins, etc. Free Keene Fest happens every six months, in Spring and Fall. We invite all our members to come and join us in promoting the NHLA and for an afternoon of music, food, and fun.
