Have you ever thought about serving on the NHLA Board of Directors? It’s a great way to take a leadership role in promoting liberty in New Hampshire.
The Board has seven positions (Chairman, Vice Chairman, Political Action Director, Treasurer, Membership Director, Research Director, and Secretary) and each position is a two-year term. The Board meets once a month, at a central location, usually in Concord, to plan, organize, and brainstorm ways of promoting the NHLA and pushing liberty forward through legislative activism and public outreach. These all-volunteer positions are very rewarding and do require some time commitment.
In September, the NHLA will be holding elections for Chairman and Research Director. The Chairman is responsible for setting the agenda for the meetings, presiding over the meetings, recruiting new Board members, and scheduling the annual meeting. The Research Director is responsible for bill review oversight and training, producing the weekly Gold Standard, producing documentation of NHLA positions on key legislative issues, and developing the Liberty Rating for Board approval. More details about the Board and the organization can be found here on our website.
Nominations for these positions will close midnight September 14. Elections will be open from September 18 until midnight September 28. Please submit names (or questions about the process) to chair@nhliberty.org.
Do you feel there are too many laws on the books and want to see some repealed? Are there any good laws you know of that could use some tweaking to make them more liberty friendly? Would you like to see government become less intrusive and more transparent? Well here’s your chance!
On Saturday, September 18 from 1:00-4:00pm at Murphy’s Taproom in Manchester, the Board will host a legislative initiatives summit. This is a great opportunity for you to make a difference in N.H. for present and future generations.
The summit will be divided into small committee-like think tanks each dedicated to a certain topic (education, guns, taxes, property rights, repeals, automotive, business, etc.). The committees will then brainstorm and write down all of the ideas, goals, and objectives that come up during their discussion. By the end of the summit, we would like to have summaries from each committee that will hopefully become proposed legislation.
There will be current and former Reps present to assist committees with issues, ideas, and selecting a legislator for possible sponsorship. Members who plan to attend are asked to do your homework on the issues you bring to the table before presenting your ideas. This summit is extremely important for N.H. and we want to be as productive as possible.
We know you have great ideas on how to push public policy in a pro-liberty direction. Now is the time to stop complaining and present those ideas. You no longer have an excuse for your voice not being heard.
R.S.V.P. to secretary@nhliberty.org. Please indicate the issue you’ll be bringing to the table.
On Sunday, September 5 from 2:00 – 7:00pm in Theos Parking Lot, 102 Elm St., Manchester, N.H., Kevin Bloom, one of the founders of Informal University, will be hosting a benefit fundraiser for the NHLA and Scholars’ Academy. There will be beer, brats, brutwurst, live music and more. This promises to be a spectacular event. You are not going to want to miss this.
Tickets are only $20, which includes admission, live music, and pizza. Advance ticket sales are $17.50 if purchased online. Go to http://informalu.org/ and click on the button/banner at the bottom of the page.
Many thanks go to Keith and Susan A. for hosting this year’s annual meeting. There were approximately 40 people in attendance to discuss the future of the organization and analyze some of the past year’s successes. Many members presented valuable input on increasing NHLA’s effectiveness and we thank you for your insight. At the conclusion of the meeting, everyone stayed for BBQ provided by the hosts.
Last month, the NHLA donated $100 from the Civic Action Fund to Jen’s Friends Cancer Foundation in North Conway, N.H. Jen’s Friends Cancer Foundation provides supplemental financial assistance and other resources to cancer patients and their families in the Mount Washington Valley area who are uninsured, underinsured, or financially challenged, allowing them to focus on battling cancer without worrying about the indirect financial burdens that often arise. Financial support is tailored to the individual’s needs, and may include support for housing, utilities, groceries, pharmaceuticals, childcare and travel costs. Jen’s Friends raises its funds through two major fundraising events each year, sales from Jen’s Friends merchandise, and private donations.
To learn more about Jen’s Friends, go to http://jensfriends.org/.
The Civic Action Fund was created to help support private, non-government funded organizations (such as Scholars’ Academy in Manchester) or fellow N.H. citizens in time of need. If you become aware of other people or places that could use our support, email vicechair@nhliberty.org with your suggestions.
The Deerfield Fair is the biggest fair in New Hampshire and is coming soon, Thursday, September 30 to Sunday, October 3. It draws thousands of people from all over the state to one (convenient for us) location. Participation in this event is crucial to give the NHLA greater exposure to a large number of voters and potential activists.
Especially at a time when the number of dissatisfied voters who are fed up with the current political climate is on the rise, we need to be there to reach out to them and show them a vehicle (the NHLA) wherein they can channel their energy and help return this state back to fiscal sanity, freedom, prosperity, and peace.
The Board is currently recruiting volunteers to help man a table at this event for two of the four days, Friday and Saturday. If you can help, please email Keith at membership@nhliberty.org.
September 14 is Primary Election Day and there are many NHLA-endorsed candidates whose primaries are contested. It is imperative that we do what we can to ensure that these candidates make it through the primary cycle and onto the General Election. We encourage all members to devote some extra time to helping these candidates with sign waves, literature drops, phone calls, door to door, financial contributions, etc. By working hard to get these candidates past September 14, we are one step closer to helping New Hampshire keep its tradition of liberty.
The NHLA endorses the below Primary Election candidates (* indicates a contested primary). For a complete list of all endorsed candidates, please visit http://www.nhliberty.org/2010/endorsements.
